"The One With the Arrival"

Well I will start off this blog and let everyone know that I have safely arrived at Uganda Christian University. The campus is absolutely beautiful. Everything is so green from the 86 acre campus, the palm trees, mango trees, and hundreds of other assorted plants and trees that I do not recognize, never mind pronounce their native names. Today is our second full day of living at UCU. After 2 very long flights we were picked up at the airport. We had a 2 hour van ride to our school. It was hot, sticky, and dark, but we arrived at about 11pm and were absolutely exhausted and definitely still feeling like we were on Eastern Time which meant it was 3pm back home. We are living in the Honors College dorms. There are two girls dorms-Winfred and Josaphine. I live in Winfred with 7 other USP students and we are waiting for our fellow Ugandan students to move in this weekend. They will be here soon because classes start on Monday.

I know that I love, Africa, I know that I wanted to come back, and I know that I wanted to be here this semester, but when I walked into my dorm room I think I had the sudden thought, "Oh my goodness this is where I am living for 4 months?" I live with a roommate who is so sweet and our laughs, jokes, and her playing the guitar have definitely made our little room with 1 bunk bed and 1 desk to share a nice little home. Though it is only the second day, I definitely do not have that dread when I walk into my room anymore. Anyways, when we arrived we had tons of unpacking to do. My roommate and I began the process and to our surprise there was a POWERE OUTAGE. Nice. Because Meda and I packed tons of stuff in our 50lb suitcases we whipped out our crank flash lights and headlamps and began filling our closet and our trunk. We have these medium sized metal trunks that we keep locked-they remind me of a hope chest, but they are for our valuables and is really the only place to put anything.

Yes, I know this post is probably boring because it is just an update on what we have been up to, but things have been really nice here. Sleeping has been a little rough, but I secretly enjoying falling asleep under my mosquito net because it reminds me of those princes bed coverings that I always wanted. Who knew my dreams of having one of those would come together in the most practical sense in Uganda?

Well I am off to lunch where I have really not eaten much because I have not been hungry due to the heat and still adjusting. There are two categories to eat here "food" and "sauce". Food is basically a big ball of starch called makante or rice. Then there is sauce which is crushed up peanuts called g-nuts with oil or some sort of beef sauce. There is really no in between, but we still have plenty of meals to eat here and the town and capital to explore. Tea time is delicious and is thick milk tea. Alright lunch time as it is 1pm here and we have the town to go explore later this afternoon.

I will post soon and thank you for reading this!
